Organised by the 'Pelajaran Am', Social Studies and General Paper committee, the academic month was launched on Saturday in a ceremony held at the school's multi-purpose hall.
The theme was introduced in a play performed by pupils of Years 4, 5 and 6 of Kiarong Primary School (SR Kiarong) which featured a demonstration on how to sort waste and dispose of them in the correct recycle bins.
The opening ceremony was officiated by the school's headmistress, Hjh Taibah binti Hj Ahmad, who later presented badges carrying the theme to the pupils involved in the play. The performance itself was meant to set a good example for other pupils in promoting the theme.
The launch of the academic month was preceded by the recital of surah al-f
atihah which was led by Ustaz Hj Bahriman.
In conjunction with the academic month, SR Kiarong also invited a representative from the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation, Hj Mohd Noor bin Hj Mohd Salleh and seven students from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) to give a talk on the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling items.
According to Hj Mohd Noor, SR Kiarong is the second school that had requested for recycle bins to be used at the school grounds. He hoped that the school's initiative would pave the way for other schools to undertake similar initiatives.
Hj Mohd Noor added that the theme "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle" also fits the Earth Day agenda of making the environment clean and sustainable. The seven UBD students who were undergoing attachment at the department also explained the effects of waste in Kg Ayer and how the waste can be prevented.
Pupils from various levels were also asked to volunteer sorting out the waste such as aluminium cans, paper and plastic bottles between the three new recycle bins.
The ceremony ended with the reading of a 'doa selamat'.
